Preliminary 2007 Final Instructions

(Will be updated to in May 2007)

WELCOME
Thank you for your entry for the Poole 10k the race is two laps around Poole Park and Baiter Promenade.  Over the years the Festival of Running, that you will be taking part in, has grown in size and importance and now ranks as one of the most significant road running events in the South.  The main race is a member of BARR and now attracts a capacity field of 1,000 runners before race day each year.

The Minithon/youth races are probably unmatched anywhere in southern England outside the London Marathon day.  They also regularly attract around 1,000 youngsters and have been the springboard for athletes such as Charlotte Moore and Louise Damen who now represent England and Great Britain.
Many thanks to our sponsors.  This year's event is again raising funds for the
Julia's House, Poole's Children's Hospice.  Please may we ask that you attempt to raise some monies through sponsorship as just £5 per runner would equal £5000 towards Julia's House!

Where is the race HQ & Administration:
In Poole Park, Administration is in the large marquee (A map is provided on the reverse of most entry forms).

Looking for Accommodation:  The Holiday Inn Express (01202) 649222 is within 800m of the start and is on the course.  Details of other accommodation can be obtained from Poole Tourist Office on (01202) 253253.

Free Car Parking & Toilets:
This is also marked on the map.  The multi-story car park at the Civic Centre is free to runners.  If you are coming a distance please park here (follow signs to ‘Civic Centre’).  Will local club runners use the Dolphin swimming pool car park, it’s free!  Please park behind the cones.  Pre-Booked Minibuses to also park here.

Pre & Post Race Massage:
Available in the charity fayre.  Cost is £5 for 10 minutes.

Changing:
Please come changed to run if possible, however there are changing facilities in the marquee.  Please do not leave any baggage in the changing area; place it in the baggage buses provided.  You will only be allowed access to the buses on production of your race number.  Please note that kit storage is at your own risk.  Your race number will also get you a free shower at Poole Sports Centre (near Bus Station approximately 600m from the finish).

Start & Finish:
In Poole Park (close to the marquee).
Please give priority to faster runners and assemble in your estimated finishing position.  There will be time boards to assist you.  The roped off area at the front is for sub 34 minute runners only.  Please do not enter this space unless you are anticipating running under 34 minutes.

Course:
Mostly flat apart from Seldown Bridge and a small incline at Whitecliff on each of the two laps.  As you approach the finish area to start the second lap, you will be directed to the right passing the finish area to your left.  The 5km point is approximately 60 metres beyond the finish line.  All other kilometre markers will be in place, accurate to +/- 5 metres – SEAA Course Assessment Certificate 96/151.  (Subject to review).  All junctions will be marshalled.  You must comply with directions given by police or race officials, but your safety is your own responsibility.

Bollards and Safety:
There are restricting bollards approximately 1km from the start.  Please take care here and don’t overtake whilst passing through the bollards.  There will be warning signs 10m before the bollards.  Race officials will remain at the finish until the last runner has completed the course.  Where police cones have been placed in the road competitors must run inside the cones.
DO NOT run out of the coned road area into the traffic.

Drinks:
Two on course water stations this year, one at the 3km and one at the 7km point (this is the same drinks station and you will pass it twice).  In addition, there is a station at the half way point just after the finish gantry.  There will also be a drinks station at the finish.  After you have collected your drink at the finish please move away from the area so as not to restrict the flow of runners behind you.
PLEASE ONLY TAKE ONE BOTTLE and consider the runners behind you.
IMPORTANT: Please dispose of empty bottles in the two dedicated bins for this purpose.  It would be helpful if you could crush the bottle before disposal.

Race Numbers:
(Please ensure that the details on the reverse of your race number are completed prior to running).
Female numbers have a red band and male numbers have a blue band.  Please attach this number to the
front of your vest or T-shirt and ensure it is visible at all times.  If you are taking any medication please write this on the reverse and give a contact phone number.  Please note that in order to comply with UK Athletics rules you must not fold your number.  Race Referees can, and do, disqualify runners who do so.  The Race Number must only be worn by the runner to whom it has been issued - they are NOT transferable in any circumstances.

Prizes (Poole 10k Event):

Comment from this Year's Charity

Julia's House are thrilled to have been chosen as the nominated charity for this years' Poole Festival of Running and than everyone for their support.

Being a parent of any child can be exhausting at times, but never more so than with a life-limited of life-threatened child who requires intensive one-to-one care.

Sadly there will always be children who are unlikely to live into adulthood, and research indicates there are up to 200 Dorset families with such a child.  Julia's House team of community nurses and carers currently help around 60 families in their own homes and now offers Dorset's first and only children's hospice too.  Known simply as Julia's House, this warm inviting home is full of fun, full of colour and full of life.  Here the children have access to special equipment, a play activity area, a multi-sensory therapy room and three bedrooms for overnight care.

Julia's House receives no government funding and is reliant upon charitable giving.  In 2007 our running costs will be nearly £1.2 million.

This beautiful home-from-home, together with the continuing work of the Julia's House carers in families own home, is your local children's hospice service: a free service for every family in Dorset who should ever need it.

The more funds the charity raises, the more care it can provide and the more families it can reach.
